Ok, Jade is now over a year old and he has started getting sick of crik, won't hardly eat them. I've started trying pinkies but he doesn't seem to eat them much either. I know his appetite is fine because he'll eat all the superworm I give him. I've tried fruits and veggies in teh past to no avail either... Any other ideas for a main dish? I 've heard that the superworms aren't a good main food due to their lack of nutritional value.

have you tried feeder gold fish? My CWD Petri and my Beardie LOVE them!!! and they are very cheap. I set up a lil 5 gal takn for feeder n buy a few dollars at a time to last me a week or so. At my pet store i get 25 feeders for a dollar. Cheaper then crix, and alot cheaper then pinkies. I never fed Petri pinkies. They gross me out even tho they are not alive. I've had petri for 3 yrs almost and i got her when she was just under a year. She is perfectly fine and healthy

From what I understand (someone correct me if I am wrong) earth worms also known as nightcrawlers are very good source of nutritinal value. However, they carry an increased risk of internal parasites if I recall correctly. A good rule of thumb is to have 4 or 5 different kinds food items handy and present some of each that way the dragon can pick what it likes and hopefully get a varied diet at the same time. I have heard that they get 'bored' on a particular food item and you might want to chnage feeding frequencies and times to help break that lull also. Just some thoughts.

He might not have a different diet because its the dry season.

If you are feeding him too may supers, he won't eat the crix....
It is like offering you a skinny little piece of hamburger or a huge slice of prime rib....
Supers are great for the occational treat but shouldn't be offered daily.

I give Cronus and Perseus Zobhobas (kingworms) they look like super meal worms but are a different family. You don't keep them refridgerated, they are a tropical insect.

Keep trying the pinkies. You may have to "brain" them to get him interested. Someone on another list once said to try and slap the wd with the pinkie. Of course he was joking but she didn't know that. It worked. The little bugger started eating them. lol Try things such as butterworms (great calcium source), silkworms, goliath horn worms, some people do cock roaches (great nutrition - I just don't have that much stomach yet). Don't over do the night crawlers. They are great but can make a dragon go to the bathroom a lot if they are over done in one feeding. Super worms are ok if they are not the "main diet." Variety is the key. If you can get him to eat a couple different foods in one sitting than feeding supers wouldn't be a big deal.

Super worms also bite....
I tried the slap tech with my guy and all he did was pretend to be asleep till I gave up.
So I feed him all live food now and forever.

I sure get confused about some of the feeder worms: Aren't king worms, super worms and zophobas morio (the actual latin name) all the same? And from what I have read they are an excellent food source and much better on the water dragons digestive tract than a lot of insects with harder exoskeletons. Waxworms are the ones that should be used as a treat only due to extremely high fat content. Although I use them to fatten up my dragons when they are off food. www.grubco.com has a great nutritional chart on it's website if any of you are interested. It compares crix, mealies, supers and waxies.

I do know that super meal worms and zophobas are different you keep mealies cool and zophobas warm. The Zophobas are tropical insects. I'm not really sure on the mealies. I've heard that zophobas have less chitin than the super mealies.

I keep all my worms at room temp...
I get a good stock of puppa that way which AWOL really goes for, and if I leave them long enough I have gotten a few bettles too which he really enjoys crunching up.

I often wondered if they would eat the actual beetles! I imagine that they are not recommended as a food source because of the "crunchy" shells. I'll stop worrying about leaving my mealies in the viv now that I know the dragons can eat the darkling beetles. Thanks for the info!

My Tude also loves the beetles. He likes them best when they first turn and are still a little on the soft side but he will eat them either way. Those escapees don't last long. lol Giant mealworms and Super Worms are different. Supers do have the softer extoskeleton. You keep the Supers at room temp or they will die. The giants you can keep in the fridge like you would the regular mealworms. Regulars and Giants are Tenebrio Molitor. Supers are Zophobas. Hope this helps.

Just remember super worms bite and should not be left free roaming if your dragon is sleeping, once it stops eating stopping giving supers they might be a bit rough on youngsters
