Jade is starting to get a little bit of mouth rot. Do I need to go to the vet and get some Betadine or would Neosporin work? Thanks

Hi, as I said on the other forum I think the suggested cleansers are hydrogen peroxide and betadine. I would suggest you take jade to the vet just to be sure and have the vet show you how to treat it unless you have treated it before. I like to play things safe.

Cronus had mouth rot when I got her along with several other things malnutrient pnemonia ect ect she nearly died. The vet didn't think she had a chance and the antibiotics she was on nearly destoryed her kidneys. go to the vet

Again, being the voice of the self-medicator, from what I have read unless the stomatitis gets so bad that it becomes systemic and the dragon gets sepsis from it you can scrape the gums and/or use cotton swabs with peroxide and betadine. If left untreated, it can definitely get into the dragons bloodstream (sepsis) and can be fatal. If caught early it can be eliminated without antibiotics. I personally wouldn't treat it for more than week-10 days without improvement. Then it's to the vet I go! BTW, the povidine/iodine/betadine should be diluted 1:50 with water.

I guess I should mention Cronus does have her mouth shut in that picture WHAT!? Really? It so totally looks like she is gapeing at the camera. I assume if her mouth is closed that those are her gums swelling out of her mouth and scales breaking dwon from the infection?

yes she was in terrible shape when I got her. Something like mouth rot needs attention right away. You see what can happen if it isn't taken care of right away. Somethings is great to self medicate but truely after what Cronus went threw I truely believe something like mouth rot should have a vet dealing with it right away. Not to mention by the time I got Cronus the vet bills were wicked, and the antibiotics nearly killed her. 2 times a week for a month and such strong antibiotics that the vet had to give the shots. Doc V. calls Cronus her mirical dragon because she never believed Cronus would live for a second visit

After seeing her picture, I can understand why you advocate an immediate vet visit. She truly is a miracle. I don't know how someone could have let her go so long without intervening.

Well when the cost of the vet (60.00 first visit) is about double the cost of a new critter (Perseus cost me 29.95+tax) leavin the responibility to a teenager without a clue and mostly a "its a reptile they don't have feelings like a dog or cat " attidude. At least they put Cronus in the freecycle on the computer rather than just letting her die, tho nearly to late. Oh and don't forget the pet store that sells them with wrong or incomplete information. (Does Petco come to mind???) This is the nicest way I can see to look at it, personally my real answer to that question is A***OLES Hope I kept that polite enough. Apoligies if I didn't

30 bucks for a dragon there is wild....here when and if they ever get to the local petshops, prices average 125 and up.
Now that you have posted a before shot, is there an after shot to show off improvements?

I have to stick with see your vet. And I'm figure you know and just had Jade on her back to take the picture, but dragons don't have diaphrams they use there ribs to help breath and can't breath on there backs.

That definitely looks like mouth rot. There is a girl on repticzone curently self medicating her CWD for it. You might read some of her posts and see what she is doing. She says Poser has made remarkable progress in just a couple of days!
