Ok my adult male cwd will absolutley not eat any crix, or any type of worm. It came down to just pinky's. all he will eat is pinky mice an maybe if im lucky a dozen crickets every 2 weeks. He will eat about 4 -6 pinkies a week. Is this unhealthy? So many people have told me that it is really bad for them. I dont think it is but if it is please tell me because my female is starting to refuse crickets.

What types of worms have you tried?
Awol gets Giant mealworms, Super mealworms, pinkies , fuzzies, goldfish ( out of the water in fron tof him ) small spoonfuls of yogurt if the wife is eating it so I can raid her ( I don't eat the stuff ) and I was also told last night by a retile dealer and insect supplier to try mango baby food. Oh yea I have also started feeding silk worms to Awol and I am going to spare no expense and buy him a butterworm hahaha ok they cost a lot so he will only get one maybe 2 to start with.

alright i added you to my AIM buddy list. believe me ive tried every thing. he use to love bananas i would only give a peice to him as a treat. he would go crazy for bananna and now he wont touch it. He will eat nothing but pinky's or fuzzy's. I dont mind feeding him nothing but pinky's because i breed mice to feed my monitors. i just need to know if its healthy if he has a strict diet of nothing buy pinky's and fuzzy's

The numbers in brackets after the mice are the days old.....so it would suggest they're high in calcium at least which is obviously important. "Unk" i imagine means unknown. Maybe someone else can provide more information on how rich in protein they are although I would imagine a couple of pinkys to be higher in protein then a couple of crickets.
If its really bothering you then an option would be to miss a feeding and get him hungry....I had this problem recently with my larger cwd and mealworms...he wouldnt eat crickets....missed a feeding and he ate the crickets i put in as soon as they hit the floor.

I would suggest the same thing. Skip a day and then feed him what YOU want him to eat. I was told that pinkies contain too high a fat content to be a staple food source, but since they are so high in calcium they make an excellent supplement. I think also that during the "winter" months a lot of CWD have reduced appetites. (Except maybe the males. AWOL certainly doesn't appear to be eating less-LOL and Avanyu, my male, gained 90 grams last month. What a pig!)

I am fairly certain that a diet of pinkies is too high in fat and will cause a fatty liver disorder which is fatal to water dragons. Like was already said, as a supplement pinkies rocks because they have a high calcium but a water dragons digestive system isn't as robust as a monitors and an all rodent diet is too hard on them. I would try starveing him for 1 maybe 2 days then offer super worms. Super Worms with supplements of silk worms and pinkies should provide most of the needed nutrition with proper gutloading.

alright ill try that not feeding him for 1-2 days. SO no pinky's as his main food. But How often should you feed them pinky's like once a month or something?

I have read 1 per week or even 1 every 2 weeks is all right. I have used butter worms (which are on order for me now) and I also ordered some adult silk worms to try with my 3. Good luck on changing his diet. he might be "mad" at you for a few days. LOL

yeah and he aint gunna be happy because for spring im taking my female out of the cage because i dont want a clutch this year. hes gets aggresive enough when it mating season and he had 2 females to breed with and no this year hes gunna have none..hes gunna go out of his mind lookin at my 2 females from accros the room.

I dont think anyone mentioned Earthworms aka Nightcrawlers. They are also a good source of nutrition. Maybe locusts if they are available in your area. Just thought I would throw a lil of my own 2 cents out there,lol. Good luck on gettin him to eat. Keep us posted how it goes.

Poor guy-HE IS going to be upset that you have removed his HAREM! Better watch out the next time you have him out-he MAY try to get even! LOL Mine are eveidently not old enough to breed, because, clueless as I am, I have never noticed anything out of the usual. Avanyu really doesn't pay much attention to the "girls". He's usually to busy EATING or BASKING. He is one very lazy lizard.

My goodness, no wonder he's the size of the actual Godzilla! That's a LOT of food. I ordered some adult silkworms to see if I can get Avanyu to eat something besides supers and crix.
I have a vet appointment for Drago on Saturday a.m. She is just not growing like she should be. I imagine we'll worm all 3.

Bad dragon dad confessional.... Awol has never seen a vet to date. I have had him since hatchling, he was flown out to me in the winter and I got the box right off the plane, checked for live arrival and then went right home. He has had the same tank ( 48 gal ) since I got him and also has a reptarium for outside routines where I cannot allow him free run. I am one of those people that does not do everything by the book. Never used a hydrometer in his tank just supplied a good bathing area. I feed him live and not canned. I have not dusted any insects in the past year if not longer. I do change his uvb bulb every 5-6 months as per recomendations though because without good uvb there just is nothing else.... With the wide range of foods he gets I have no fears about lacking calcium or any other nutricianal type things. Maybe he and I are just lucky..... maybe some people are just too picky who knows, all I know is my demon dragon is doing better than me LOL  |

You know DarenoAlpha... I often wondered .... I never used to pay attention to any humidity issues nor did I have a Hydrometer until Baloo got sick. Puff has always been healthy,and seemed to do well with what we did.The only reason I took her to the Vet was because I HAD to take baloo when he/she got ill. She has been wormed and that is it. Baloo on the other hand is my problem dragon. Has to be babied and hand fed. AWOL is in perfect condition and VERY handsome, so I think you are doing a wonderful job at what you are doing. As Grandpa used to say "if its not broke, dont fix it"
