Not that I am exactly excited about starting Puff on pinkies, but I have a few questions before I try it.... At what age/size do you all recommend offering pinky's? Pinkies are all normally about the same size right? Or should I make sure to pick and choose when I go to get them? Also.. a question about the bones Do the bones or bone pieces show up in the WD's stool? Is there anything I should watch for when feeding pinkies.. like chokin etc? Also.. How do you make the pinkie seem to be alive? Or do your Dragons just run right for em? Giving that Puff (16 STL) has never had a pinkie what are your suggestions on how to start her out on them feeding technique suggestions please. Thanks ;D

Avanyu ate pinkies once and has refused ever since. I used live pinkies and you can choose the size at my pet store. Most people use frozen and I know nothing about them, except you thaw them first and can shake them around with tweezers if necessary. a 16" dragon should be able to eat one. They eat them whole and I never noticed any bones in the fecal matter. I suppose it dissolves. Good luck.

If your going to do pinkies then I would suggest live, many people don't believe in this practice but if you stay with baby mice there is no real danger presented from rodents fighting back.
Ask the clerk to get you the smallest ones to try and telling them it is for a young dragon so they do get small ones first.
I too have never seen anything that looks like pinkie in the stool.

OMG no way I cannot get a LIVE pinky !! It is bad enough I have to get any at all. I would prefer the frozen ones, cuz the poor lil things are already dead I dont even know why that matters to me because I dont even like mice. But I guess any living animal being killed right there in front of me breaks my heart. Hmm... maybe I wont even try the pinkies Do you all think that is necessary? Or could I pass without doing it and stickin to the wormy/cricket diet?

Dragons are MEAT eaters and pinkies are MEAT.
If it makes you feel better, when Awol hits one it has no time to feel much of anything because he grabs and gives a violent snap with his head and then there is no movement out of the mouse.
I recorded it as a video clip and can give it to anyone one the messengers that would like to get an idea of how easy it is to feed them mice and how fast it is all over.
Like I said they are meat eaters and it is just part of the game in my eyes.

A rule of thumb that I use to decide if something is to big for my herps to eat is, if the food (pinky or crickets) can fit between the eyes of the herp then they will be able to eat it, that means if you place the pinkie nose to nose with the wd and the body fits between the eyes of the wd then the wd should be able to eat it.

I've always used the frozen mice. I put the little mousecicle (hehe) in a baggie, run very hot water into a glass, put the baggie in the hot water-usually have to weight it down and let it thaw and become warm. Many times, depending on the number and size of mice I'm thawing Ihave to run fresh hot water a couple of times.
I just wave the thawed mice in the air so that my lizards see what I'm doing and lay them down in the feeding area. They just grab and go! Crystal

Alright, by popular demand the gracefuldragons webspace is now hosting a video of awol eating a feeder mouse for all those interested in seeing it. Its by no means a gorey video and its posted for those of you who are wondering about how a dragon takes down a feeder animal. You may need to download and install a codec to play this in your windows media player. You can get the codec by right clicking this link and selecting SAVE TARGET AS.. codec- www.livewiregames.net/members/heavymetal/xvidcodec.exeonce the download is complete install the package and it auto update the media player then you can do the same thing with the video. (right click and select SAVE TARGET AS... video- www.geocities.com/gracefuldragons/video/feedingtime.aviThen all you need to do is play the video in your windows media player. Download time for each of these ietms should be very short as the video is compressed with no sound. Both files are about 1 MB each.

You GUYS! What are you going to come up with next? LOL How about "Water Dragon mud fights?" My husband has a vide at home that he and the grandsons (6,3,2 1/2) watch called "Exploding Varmints" about Prairie Dog hunting. It must be a MAN THING! PS. I have seen my daughter's dragon eat whole mice. While not particularly appealing, it is a natural event in the lives of both CWD and mice. Poor mice, they get eaten by just about EVERYTHING!

When I first filmed it, I was just testing the avi feature on my digital camera but afterwards I recompressed it and showed it to a couple friends who had never seen a dragon, let alone an eating dragon. Then when people started talking about the goods and bads of feeding live well this just helps show how fast it can be over for the food item. Exploding varmints huh??? Don't suppose you have a capture card LOL ( runs for cover )
