Hey all,
Wanted to post this mostly to keep those following my dragons up to date. I took both my dragons with me to the vet today. As soem of you may know skittle has been on and off a steady diet as of late. He'll eat fine one week then starve for a week the go back and eat for a week and so on. Anyhow, took them both to the vet. Few things were determined.
1) My vet was more excited to see Pooka come along for the ride then interested in getting the visit done. This was great to see him remember her, he had not seen her for many months and asked about her when we took skittle in for his initial check.
2) He determined Pooka was certainly a female. He said that she was still a bit young but he knew enough about her size and weight to assess that she was starting to mature as a female. He poked at her belly and said she appeared to be gearing up for a reproductive cycle. I'm pretty sure she won't be laying eggs anytime soon but the doc hinted she was going to be capable of it in the not so distant future. He also is confident skittle is male by skull and body shape although he said skittle may still be just a bit young to 100% positive, he was rather certain though.
3) Weights. Pooka weighed 26 grams last time we took her in for failure to feed (note mealworms plus waxworms togther in one feeding = bad dragon stomach ache) She came in at 96.7 grams today. Thats a huge jump from here baby weight of 6 grams the first time our doc seen her back in november. I forgot Skittles previous weight but his weight today was 36 grams.
4) He did an physical exam of both dragons. I observed him checking there vents, arms, legs, tails, nostrils, mouths, and eyes. All was fine there. A short exam of stool determined that Skittle had a moderate parasite load of a parasite that causes upper digestive inflamation (not sure what the parasite was) Pooka was also infected (I knew if he was she would be thats why I brough both along) although her load was almost negligible. Both dragons were treated with a white pasty medication administered though a needeless syringe.
Both dragons have been fine all weekend (visit was early friday morning)the had rebounded back to eating within ours of the visist. I had to disinfect the cage so I also rearranged the decor and set it up with more open space, larger branches and a larger water area. I have to start looking into the new viv in earnest now since pooka may be starting her cycles in fall, a laying area is going to be a must. I'll post some pics of the new viv arrangement, the most recent dragon pics I have after the visist and a new toy I bought for them this weekend shortly in the photo gallery. Thanks all and have a great weekend.
