Hello Ladydragonstar, Welcome to GD, glad to have you here. I hope our forum and community is useful for you and your little one. Personally I tried both bark chips and the coco fibre bedding and found them both to be not worth the hassle or risk. I have had my two dragons on outdoor carpeting for almost a year now with no issues other then it being hard (understandably so) to keep humidity up. Water dragons are not a burrowing animal unless they are digging a nesting spot so your little one digging at young age is more likely a sign that he wants to get out of the cage, I would not feel to bad if you change substrates and he cannot dig anymore. As far as the branches... I use wild collected branches in my own vivs, wild collected rocks too. I simply either back them at 350 for 20 minutes (keep an eye on them so they don;t burn the house down) or soak them in a bleach/water solution then rinse them well and allow to dry overnight. Either of these methods ought to render the objects safe for your dragons use. Best of luck and again welcome.
