::)I hope someone can help me. I have two Aus. WD babies. One is about 6 months old and the other is probably 8 months. I know that adult males have a red chest but what about WD at this age. Both of the young ones have a reddish tummy and chest. I guess my question is can or do babies this age have some red on their tummies or are both of them males. I am hoping for a female and male but the red makes me think they are both males. Any help would really be appreciated.

yes more then likely that is the case but AWD males get along much better then CWD males so as long as you have a good size cage as their adults they should be fine ;D

How old do Aust. WD have to be before you can tell their sex? With the red on them would that be a sign that they are old enough to be sexed. These WD's are very small, I'm surprised that the red would show up so soon. This is all new to me.

i have two which are (well i was told) 15 months.. they are 37 and 32cm respectavely (12-14inches) and neither have any sign of red on thier chest. Since one outgrew the other pretty quickly i thought i might have a male and female, now i am thinking more of 2 females and one is just outgrowing the other.
For your question, They can start showing signs of red on thier stomach from as young as 6-7 months. I have seen a few around this age with pretty red stomachs. In just depends on the individual.
As for the sex, i would say you have definite males (about 95% sure). Both males and females can get red on thier stomachs, some females do some don't. When they do, it is usually after a year-14 months that they will start to show signs of the red and when they do its pretty dull, whereas the male's stomachs will become very bright and livid. Also, males usually get a bigger crest and tend to grow about 4-8cms bigger

That is funny that you have what appears to be 2 females and I have 2 males. I was wanting a female so I could try to breed them. It looks like purchasing baby WD's is mostly hit and miss. I still would like to get a female but it seems like an impossibility.

Well think of it this way, once those two are older you can buy an already sexed female and put her in with them. ... ... ... You'd have to watch them carefully for any signs of true aggression probably, but I recall reading a few times that they're actually more likely to breed and likely to breed sooner if there are two males in there, sort of like the males are competing to be sexed up.

hmmm.... i have read of people SAYING that aussies arent generally aggressive, but then i have only SEEN ONCE where they was a fight or any aggresions between two males, and that was with no female in the enclosure. If you did decide to raise them together i would monitor them very closely. As i said, as well as Dibdip said, some may do ok together im not 100% that they are both females and i'm going to get them sexed in a couple of weeks

I have heard of exceptions to the rule for all kinds of things in this hobby, including houseing males togther. All you need to do is be aware of the risks and have the means to end the situation if need be (second cage immediatly available or funds set aside to acquire one).
