I have heard that calcium based sand is bad for the bearded dragons. Is this just a rumor, or should I buy different sand?

All sand (includeing calci sand) runs a slight risk of impaction when the dragon eats any of it. I know keepers that succesfully keep there dragons on calci sand with no problems. I personally would probably opt for the calci sand or outdoor carpetting for keeping a beardie. Of course I have done very little research as to beardie substrates and would proabably bone-up on that bit more more before makeing a final desicision. Sorry I could not be more informative.

Everyone will tell you something different when asked about calci-sand products. There are pro's and con's on both sides. The risk of impaction is there, but it's there with play sand and other substrates too. There are some ppl that state there is too much calcium in it and it decreases the amount of stomach acids which disrupts digestion. There are some that say the extra calcium is good because very few dragons actually get the amount of calcium they need. I currently have a 2 BD's, one is on calci-sand and is doing great, the other one sits and eats it when I try to put it in her cage, so I keep taking it out again. I fear she may get impaction from doing this, but I also wonder if she is trying to get calcium she feels she is lacking in her diet. Both my BD's eat the same food, however. Is she trying to tell me something?? I've adjusted her diet to add a bit more calcium but she still eats it constantly. So, I guess to answer your question, it's really up to you to decide which side of this debate to take. Ask others what they use and if they have had problems. Me? I go with what is best, or seems the best, on a case by case basis...one on calci-sand, and one isn't. Sorry I couldn't give you specific answers, but I just don't think there are any.

Yes!!!!!
I like people that give the pro’s and con’s of a product very good Cyrene on that explanation on the sand. It reminds me of when my nice bought her breaded dragon and they were going to by it sand because they seen the guy in sand before they bought it and me also brought up the word impaction to them and said to them be on the safe side a get indoor outdoor carpeting. ;D ;D
